There are different ways of funding a family law case: Fixed Fee: At Franklins Solicitors we charge a fixed fee for an initial consultation with one of our experienced family law professionals to discuss your matter in person or by virtual means. Hourly Rate: Upon formally instructing the firm, you will be charged the hourly rate of your designated family law professional whereby you will be billed usually once a month. Your bill will set out the work that the solicitor has undertaken on your matter. We will provide you with a formal estimate of your costs at the start of your matter within our client care documentation and we will keep that estimate under review as your matter progresses.

So having a legal document like a cohabitation agreement can be useful, alongside a will, if one of you becomes seriously ill, dies or if you split up. It will protect you both, and any other family members who’ll be affected.

For example, an agreement can make sure you have:

a share of each others’ assets

access to each others’ state pension

next of kin rights in a medical emergency
