Meeting between National Trust and Government to discuss controversial planning reform
The National Trust and the Government are due to hold talks this week to discuss the proposed reforms to the planning system.
The fear amongst members of the National Trust and other conservation groups is that the reforms will lead to a sharp increase in development in green belt land and other rural areas. Officials from the National Trust were due to meet the Planning Minister, Greg Clark on Wednesday to discuss the changes.
Mr Clark has suggested that he may agree to some changes in the wording but he would not agree to a u-turn of the policy. The National Trust however will be looking for substantial changes. A spokeswoman for the trust said: "We know the minister has said he is happy to talk about some of the language but we are looking for much more than that," She added: "As far as we are concerned the tone of the whole document is wrong. We are looking for big changes to it. That is how we are going into the meeting.”
The Government is likely to resist major changes as they see the planning reforms as a vital part of their economic strategy. George Osbourne defended the reforms in the House of Commons by stating: "The planning costs in Britain are among the highest in the world and the planning delays are among the longest in the world. That is what we are seeking to deal with so that we get economic development that is sustainable, that protects our most cherished environment.”
